روفوس یک هیولا بود.
یک هیولای خیلی خیلی بزرگ.
او بزرگ‌تر از یک خانه بود و خیلی بزرگ‌تر از تو و من.
Rufus was a monster.
A very, very BIG monster.
He was bigger than a house and WAY BIGGER than you or me.
روفوس یکی از بهترین هیولاهای آن‌طرف‌ها بود.
اما به چشم همه بدجنس و سنگدل به نظر می‌رسید.
صورتش همیشه اخمو بود. او سعی کرد، سعی کرد، و بازهم سعی کرد اما نتوانست اخمی که روی صورتش بود به لبخند تبدیل کند.
Rufus was one of the nicest monsters around.
But to everyone else, he looked mean and ferocious.
His face was always stuck in a frown. He tried and tried and tried, but he just couldn't turn his frown into a smile.
روفوس خیلی هم باادب بود. او همیشه چیزهایی مثل «سلام» یا «خیلی ممنونم» می‌گفت.
اما همه آدم‌ها، چیزهایی که او می‌گفت را به شکل «غرش» می‌شنیدند.
Rufus was also very polite. He would always say things like, "Hello," or "Thank you very much."
But to everyone else, it always sounded like, "RRROOOOOOOAAAAAAAAR".
نیاز به گفتن نیست که روفوس یک هیولای غمگین و تنها بود.
Needless to say, Rufus was a very sad and lonely monster.
یک روز روفوس خیلی گرسنه بود. اطرافش را نگاه کرد و یک بستنی قیفی بزرگ دید. روفوس گفت: «دهنم آب افتاد!» اما به نظر آمد که غرش می‌کند!
One day, Rufus was terribly hungry. He looked all around and saw a BIG ice cream cone. "Yummy!" said Rufus. But of course, it sounded like, "RRRRROAAAAAAAR!!"
روفوس با نهایت سرعت به‌طرف بستنی قیفی دوید. اما هر بار که روفوس دوید بازوها، پاها و دمش به چیزهایی که سر راهش بودند خورد.
روفوس گفت: «ببخشید!»
اما به نظر رسید که غرش می‌کند!
Rufus ran toward the ice cream cone as fast as he could. But every time Rufus ran, his arms, feet, and tail would crash into anything close by.
"Sorry!" said Rufus.
But of course, it sounded like, "RRRROOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAR!!"
Just as Rufus was about to eat his ice cream, he noticed that it had become really noisy. People were screaming, cars were honking, and sirens were sounding.
درست وقتی‌که می‌خواست بستنی را بخورد متوجه شد که زیادی سروصدا راه انداخته است. مردم داشتند جیغ می‌زدند، ماشین‌ها بوق می‌زدند و آژیرها به صدا در آمده بودند.
Rufus saw a group of people nearby and asked "Excuse me. What's going on?"
But of course, when he said this, it sounded like, "RRROOOOOOAAAAAR!"
So the people just screamed and ran away.
روفوس گروهی از مردم را در نزدیکی‌اش دید و پرسید: «ببخشید، چه خبر شده؟»
اما وقتی این را گفت به نظر رسید که غرش می‌کند!
به همین خاطر مردم جیغ زدند و فرار کردند.
Suddenly, a group of policemen surrounded Rufus.
"Freeze!" they shouted, "Drop the ice cream cone and put your hand and claw in the air!"
Rufus was really scared. He dropped the ice cream cone and raised his arms.
"I'm sorry," he said, "I didn't mean to do anything wrong."
But of course, to the policemen, it sounded like,
ناگهان یک دسته پلیس روفوس را محاصره کردند. آن‌ها داد زدند: «از جات تکون نخور. بستنی قیفی رو بنداز و دست‌ها و پنجه‌ها تو ببر بالا!
روفوس واقعاً ترسیده بود. بستنی را انداخت و دست‌هایش را بالا برد.
او گفت: «ببخشید. نمی‌خواستم کار بدی بکنم.»
اما این بار هم پلیس‌ها فکر کردند که غرش می‌کند!
"Get him!" shouted the policeman.
Rufus became so frightened that he started to run away as fast as he could. The policemen hopped into their police cars and helicopters and chased after Rufus.
"I didn't mean to do anything wrong," shouted Rufus, "I'm sorry!"
پلیس‌ها داد زدند: «بگیریدش!»
روفوس آن‌قدر ترسید که با نهایت سرعت شروع به دویدن کرد. پلیس‌ها ماشین‌ها، و بالگردهایشان را سوار شدند و شروع به تعقیب روفوس کردند.
روفوس فریاد زد: «ببخشید. نمی‌خواستم کار بدی بکنم.»
روفوس در یک پارک گوشه‌ای ساکت پیدا کرد. آنجا نشست و با خود فکر کرد که چرا هیچ‌کس نمی‌خواهد نزدیک او باشد و چرا پلیس آن‌قدر از دست او عصبانی است. احساس کرد واقعاً غمگین و تنهاست.
و هنوز هم خیلی گرسنه بود.
Rufus found a quiet spot to hide in the park. He sat down and wondered why no one wanted to be near him and why the police were so mad at him. He felt really sad and lonely.
AND he was still terribly hungry.
ناگهان صدای نحیفی از پائین شنید.
«سلام».
کنار روفوس یک دختر کوچولو ایستاده بود. دخترک گفت: «به نظرم تو گرسنته. صدای قاروقور شکمتو می‌شنوم.» آنجا آن‌قدر ساکت و آرام بود که روفوس هم می‌توانست صدای قاروقور شکمش را بشنود.
دخترک دستش را به‌طرف روفوس دراز کرد. «بیا. اگه بخای می تونی یه کمی از بستنی قیفی من بخوری.» روفوس کمی به دخترک نگاه کرد و کمی مکث کرد. دخترک گفت: «نترس. من گاز نمی‌گیرم.»
All of a sudden, Rufus heard a tiny voice from below.
"Hello."
Standing next to Rufus was a little girl. "Sounds like you're hungry," she said, "I can hear your tummy rumbling." It was so calm and quiet that Rufus could hear his tummy rumbling too.
The little girl held her hand out to Rufus. "Here, you can have some of my ice cream cone if you'd like." Rufus looked at the little girl and paused for a moment. "It's OK," she said, "I won't bite."
روفوس آرام بستنی را از دخترک گرفت. با دندان‌های خیلی خیلی بزرگش کوچک‌ترین گازی را که می‌توانست از بستنی گرفت. بستنی خیلی خیلی خوب بود!
دخترک پرسید: «الآن حالت بهتره؟» روفوس سرش را تکان داد و همین‌که می‌خواست بگوید «خیلی ممنون» ناگهان پلیس‌ها با همهمه و سر صدای زیادی سررسیدند.
Rufus gently took the ice cream from the little girl. He took the tiniest bite he could with his BIG, BIG teeth. The ice cream tasted soooo good!
"Do you feel better now?" asked the little girl. Rufus nodded and was just about to say "Thank you," when all of a sudden, the policemen appeared in a big commotion.
پلیس به دخترک گفت: «مراقب باش. تو کنار یک هیولای بدجنس و سنگدل وایسادی!»
دخترک به پلیس گفت: «اون بدجنس و سنگدل نیست. فقط خیلی گرسنشه. صدای قاروقور شکمشو نمی شنوین؟»
پلیس گوش کرد. آنجا آن‌قدر ساکت و آرام شده بود که آن‌ها هم توانستند صدای قاروقور شکم روفوس را بشنوند.
"Be careful!" shouted the policemen to the little girl, "You're standing next to a mean and ferocious monster!"
"He's not mean and ferocious," said the little girl to the policemen, "He's just really hungry. Can't you hear his tummy rumbling?"
The policemen stopped and listened. It became so calm and quiet that they could hear Rufus' tummy rumbling too.
بعد پلیس فهمید چه اتفاقی افتاده است. آن‌ها اخم روفوس را دیده و فکر کرده بودند که بدجنس است. آن‌ها صدای غرش او را شنیده و فکر کرده بودند که سنگدل است.
اما روفوس اصلاً بدجنس و سنگدل نبود. همه‌ی این‌ها یک سوءتفاهم بزرگ بود.
Then the policemen realized what had happened. They had looked at Rufus' frown and thought he was mean. They had heard his "RRROOOAAAARR!" and thought he was ferocious.
But Rufus wasn't mean or ferocious at all. It was just a BIG misunderstanding.
پلیس‌ها احساس شرمندگی می‌کردند. آن‌ها گفتند: «معذرت می‌خایم. ما اشتباه کردیم که تو رو تعقیب کردیم. میشه ما رو ببخشی؟»
روفوس سرش را تکان داد گفت «آره عیبی نداره.»
اما این بار هم به نظر آمد که غرش می‌کند!
The policemen felt really bad. "We're sorry," they said, "We were wrong to chase after you. Can you ever forgive us?"
Rufus nodded and said, "Yeah, it's OK."
But of course it sounded like,
"RRROOOOOAAAARR!"
The little girl and the policemen all laughed and laughed. At that moment, Rufus was the happiest he had ever been and he didn't feel lonely or sad anymore
دخترک و پلیس‌ها خندید و بازهم خندیدند. در آن لحظه بود که روفوس از هر وقت دیگری خوشحال‌تر بود و دیگر احساس غم و تنهایی نکرد.
and suddenly, Rufus' frown became a great BIG beautiful smile!
ناگهان اخم روی صورت روفوس به لبخند بزرگ و زیبایی تبدیل شد.
